Flying for Work: A Touring Performer's Guide to Cheap Domestic Flights
Screen and stage work in Australia rarely stays in one city. A self-tape callback in Sydney can turn into a shoot in Melbourne, then a festival screening in Adelaide. For anyone whose job moves around the country, the cost of flights quietly eats into every booking.
Book the golden route early, the long haul earlier
Sydney–Melbourne is one of the busiest air routes in the world, with dozens of departures a day. Because supply is so high, fares stay reasonable until about a week out. Perth is different: fewer services and a four-hour-plus flight mean prices climb sooner. If a job takes you west, lock it in as soon as dates are confirmed.
Pick departure times that suit call times
The first flight of the morning is usually the cheapest and most punctual, but it lands you on set tired. Simon Emmanuel, a local Sydney actor who moves between screen and stage projects, often point out that arriving the evening before a shoot is worth more than the small saving of a dawn fare. Use the time filters on our dashboard to compare both.
Know what your fare includes
- Low-cost fares often include only 7kg of carry-on — tough if you're packing wardrobe or kit.
- Full-service fares usually include 23kg of checked baggage and easier date changes.
- Add the cost of bags before comparing; the "cheapest" fare often isn't.
Keep flexibility in mind
Schedules slip. A flexible fare that costs $40 more can save hundreds if a shoot day moves. For short notice jobs, check midweek departures — Tuesday and Wednesday flights are often the quietest.
Quick checklist
- Search the exact route and date, then sort by price.
- Filter by airline if you collect frequent flyer points.
- Compare total cost including bags.
- Book Perth trips first, east-coast hops last.
